More BT Sport Women's Super League pundits and former England internationals Sue Smith and Laura Bassett both agree the standard of refereeing must improve, and believes the Lionesses could achieve great things at the World Cup next year. England manager Phil Neville was scathing of the performance of one official during his side's 1-1 draw with Australia earlier in October, with the Lionesses denied two penalties and wrongly having a goal disallowed. Man City’s inventive free-kick routine highlights Pep Guardiola’s pragmatism

Dream Team FC
Man City’s inventive free-kick routine highlights Pep Guardiola’s pragmatism

We’ve seen it all now.

The first-half of Liverpool’s clash with Man City won’t live long in the memory.

The two sides played out a rather tame 45 minutes as both Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola waited to see who flinched first.

There was however one utterly bizarre moment that did occur in the first 45 at Anfield.

We can’t quite get our heads around it.

It seemed, at first, as though Liverpool accidentally forced Man City into going long with what would usually be a routine short free-kick for City.

Or, was it just Guardiola’s men willing turning a set-piece in a non-threatening area into a goal-scoring opportunity?

AFP or licensors The thinking man[/caption]

Let us explain.

As soon as the free-kick was award, Virgil van Dijk and co immediately began to take their shape and form a line that you would usually see when defending a wide free-kick.

City bizarrely obliged when 9/10 times they would go short.

Unusually for City they lined up to go long from a set-piece close to the half-way line Riyad Mahrez pumped the ball forward aimed towards Aymeric Laporte Jordan Henderson was on-hand to clear the danger away Guardiola was locked in deep conversation with his assistant manager Mikel Arteta

We got our answer in the second-half.

City lined up to pull-off the same routine once more just ten minutes after the break.

Again, Laporte drifted out to a wide area and awaited the ball from Mahrez.

It failed to work the second time they tried it “HOOOOF!”

The added height of Laporte is clearly going to become a weapon that City might utilise more in the future.

Premier League defences, beware.

The set-piece was something you associate more with Sam Allardyce.

Getty - Contributor Bloody hell, they’re parking the bus now too[/caption]

Putting all dead-jokes to one side, it was refreshing to see Guardiola trying something different.

He’s just proved what few doubters he had, that he’s by no means a one-trick pony.

Pep going route one? Madness.

Glenn Murray’s remarkable rise over the last 12 months should not be ignored

Dream Team FC
Glenn Murray’s remarkable rise over the last 12 months should not be ignored

Brighton fans absolutely love Glenn Murray, and who can blame them?

The 35-year-old has been the club’s main source of goals since their promotion to the Premier League, despite being in the twilight of his playing days.

In fact, the only Englishmen to score more goals than Murray this calendar year are seasoned internationals Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy.

That’s pretty impressive, y’know.

What’s more, Murray’s netted three times as many Premier League goals this year as pricey ‘big-name’ forwards Alexis Sanchez and Alvaro Morata – proof that the big six are sniffing around the wrong places for goalscorers.

AFP or licensors The ultimate goal poacher[/caption]

But with the likes of Sam Baldock up front, flanked by the previous Championship Player of the Year Anthony Knockaert, nobody expected the Seagull’s main outlet for goals in the Premier League to be Murray back in the summer of 2017 when they were promoted from the Championship.

That all changed with his excellent form in the early weeks of last season when he netted some pretty important goals.

Inspirational at times, he scored four-times in three games before the November international break last year, while his biggest moment came with a brace against West Ham in Brighton’s brilliant 3–0 away win.

Glenn Murray was the old guy Brighton would have to make do with until they found a Premier League striker. Now, at 35, he’s vital to the team. He’s made an improvement jump in the last 12 months.

— Paul Hayward (@_PaulHayward) October 5, 2018

PA:Press Association He loves a goal against the Hammers, doesn’t he?[/caption]

Having previously played for the likes of Crystal Palace and Bournemouth in the top-flight, Murray has the perfect blend of experience with relegation-threatened clubs and an eye for goal.

However, he’d previously struggled to be a potent goalscorer in the top-flight, and was no where near double-figures in his previous seasons in the Premier League.

PA:Press Association Aguero? Meh[/caption]

But his role in the team and his form in front of goal means he’s suddenly become one the best strikers in the top-flight.

Just don’t talk about him in front of West Ham fans.

With his goal this evening, he’s now netted six-times against the Hammers, while he’s once again up there with the big boys with five goals to his name already this season.

That was Glenn Murray's sixth goal against West Ham.

That's two more than against any other Premier League opponent.#BHAWHU pic.twitter.com/aLEU0KJRht

Lyon players say playing behind closed doors ‘still better atmosphere than the Etihad’

Lyon players say playing in a stadium with no fans allowed in is ‘still a better atmosphere than the Etihad’, according to sources.

The French side shocked Premier League winners Man City at the Etihad in the first group stage game.

However, UEFA ordered the club to play their first group-stage home game behind closed doors as a punishment.

No-one likes midweek fixtures anywayReuters

According to unofficial club snapper Lee Satchell, who was on the sidelines for the match against Shakhtar, the players all thought the atmosphere was better inside the empty Groupama Stadium than the Etihad.

Despite not a single Lyon fan being allowed entry for the game, the players still said there was more noise than their match against the English champions, according to Satchell.

Satchell added that he heard one player saying he didn’t realise the stadium in Manchester wasn’t full until he noticed the chairs were also sky-blue.

According to Arsenal the stadium was at full capacityAFP or licensors AFP or licensors

As the players began the game they were met with row upon row of empty seats and he heard one prominent defender claiming that if felt like they were back at the Etihad.

The club were forced to play behind closed doors as a punishment for crowd disorder and racism in last season’s Europa League.

Where has it all gone wrong for the strikers in Madrid?

Dream Team FC
Where has it all gone wrong for the strikers in Madrid?

The Spanish capital has produced and nurtured some of the finest goalscorers football has ever seen.

Real Madrid’s long list of Galacticos is finely countered by the likes of Sergio Aguero, Radamel Falcao, Fernando Torres and Antoine Griezmann across the famous city.

So where has it all gone wrong in more recent times?

Atletico Madrid's Colombian forward Radamel Falcao celebrates after scoring a third goal during the UEFA Super Cup football match Chelsea FC versus Club Atletico Madrid, on August 31, 2012 at the Stade Louis II, in Monaco. Cristiano Ronaldo departed Real for pastures new this summer, leaving Karim Benzema – a man perennially underrated in most eyes – the most senior remaining forward.

The Frenchman has been a magnificent servant at the Bernabeu but the goals have dried up of late, scoring just four in his last 27 league games before Saturday night’s Madrid derby.

He is more of a focal point to Real, previously a buffer to Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, but his relative profligacy in front of goal might explain why they’ve managed just two in their last four league games.

Getty - Contributor Sacre bleu[/caption]

Yet across the city another stellar striker’s drought is making Benzema look prolific.

15 games and 1217 minutes without a league goal before the derby, Diego Costa is seemingly a shadow of his former self.

Getty - Contributor What’s up Diego?[/caption]

With Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata flattering to deceive, Chelsea fans may be yearning for the Costa of old who used to terrorise Premier League defences.

But the goals have deserted him too, enduring his worst ever run of form just when Atletico looked set for a proper title tilt this season.

So it wasn’t really much of a surprise then when Real and Atletico, with Costa and Benzema leading the respective lines, played out a drab stalemate in the first derby of the season.

Getty - Contributor A fruitless evening again[/caption]

EPA Courtois denied Costa[/caption]

Costa was denied by former Chelsea team-mate while Benzema failed to get into any serious goalscoring positions.

It means collectively the two have managed just four goals in their last 44 La Liga games, with Benzema contributing all of those.

With both now either already there or approaching the wrong side of 30, can they still be expected to shoulder the main goalscoring burden for two of the most prestigious sides in Europe?

This weekend’s fixtures are headlined by Chelsea and Liverpool’s top of the table clash on Saturday evening.

And Dream Team expert Nick Elliott is avoiding both sets of players with his selections.

Nick’s team

“I consider any team that boasts Shane Long as a forward positively impotent. Southampton aren’t scoring at Wolves this weekend so I’ve gone for Rui Patirico and man mountain Willy Boly,” Nick tells us.

“No team has scored fewer goals than Huddersfield this season so Jan Vertonghen slips in in defence as well.

“Fulham’s defence looks vulnerable to the say the least — Richarlison should enjoy himself this weekend.

Richarlison has already bagged three goals in three games for new side EvertonA Goodison goal fest?Reuters

“And it’s a disappointingly mainstream front two in the form of Sergio Aguero and Romelu Lukaku.

“The pair face Brighton and West Ham respectively. Goals? I think so.”

As for Adam Jones, he’s gone heavy on Manchester City players with Brighton on their way to the Etihad.

Adam’s team

He said: “City should coast against the south coasters and I certainly can’t see Brighton – who always struggle away from home – scoring.

“Ederson and Aymeric Laporte then pick themselves, while James Tarkowski is a regular Star Man merchant and I can see another coming for Burnley at Cardiff.

“Only Sergio Aguero has more Dream Team points for City than Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva so they’re my two midfielders.

A man in formReuters

“I’ve gone a bit left field in attack. Alexandre Lacazette looks in the groove and there’ll definitely be goals between Arsenal and Watford.

“And I fancy Wolves to put Southampton to the sword a bit, so Raul Jimenez gets the nod.”
