Olivier Giroud bids emotional farewell to Arsenal fans with Chelsea move imminent

Olivier Giroud bid an emotional farewell to Arsenal’s fans this evening, as he played in the final 15 minutes of the Gunners 3-1 defeat to Swansea.

The Frenchman – who’s heavily linked with a move to London rivals Chelsea before the January transfer deadline is up on Wednesday – could be seen heading over to the travelling fans at full-time, in what was almost certainly a final goodbye.

Lovely stuff.

Giroud’s imminent departure is part of a curious transfer circus that includes Arsenal’s certain-capture of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Dortmund, with Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi heading to the German giants as a replacement.

Dream Team FC
Arsene Wenger keeps taking ‘big name signings’ to new levels

You’ve got feel sorry for any Arsenal blogger right now.

They are about to face a very difficult challenge every time they write about Arsenal’s new front three.

That’s if Arsene Wenger can work some of his old school transfer window magic and complete the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.

It must have taken a while to print thoseReuters

Arsenal’s new front three of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette contains the most letters of any forward line in the club’s history.

We told you Wenger loves a ‘big name signing’.

Not only will those three be causing problems for the people who print the shirts at the clubs store but they could be part of surely the team with the longest names in football.

In midfield the Gunners could be lining up with Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Jeff Reine-Adelaide, with new boy Konstantinos Mavropanos at the back.

@Arsenal @ArsenalFanTV this singing best come in or wenger owes me a new kit make sure he sees this #arsenal #Wenger #Aubamayeng pic.twitter.com/KWZf1dh2p8

— £R💰 (@68_Bazza) January 29, 2018

You’ve got to feel for Paul Merson when he has to talk about Arsenal from now on.

However, the Aubameyang deal is not a certainty by any means with a typical transfer merry go round necessary for Dortmund to be willing to consider the move.

Dortmund need a striker to replace their Gabonese front man, so Chelsea could let Batshuayi leave for Germany, but only if Olivier Giroud goes to Stamford Bridge as a plan B for Alvaro Morata.

Mkhitaryan assist Aubameyang goal. Bang bang.Getty Images - Getty

Having made his name in the transfer market by uncovering diamonds in the French lower divisions it now looks like Wenger’s latest strategy is to sign or promote players with very long names.

When you haven’t won the Premier League for over a decade and you continue to fall further behind your rivals I guess you have to try everything.

This could be the kind of innovation Arsenal need right now.

Real Madrid knocked out of Copa del Rey by Leganes after fielding weakened team at the Bernabeu

Dream Team FC
Real Madrid knocked out of Copa del Rey by Leganes after fielding weakened team at the Bernabeu

Zinedine Zidane won’t sleep easy tonight.

Real Madrid have been eliminated from the Copa del Rey after losing the second leg of their quarter-final against Leganes 2-1 at the Bernabeu.

Los Blancos took a slender 1-0 lead into the game but were overwhelming favourites to progress to the semi-finals before kick-off.

A night to forgetJUAN MEDINA

However, Javier Eraso’s 25-yard strike after half an hour was the catalyst for an historic win for the visitors.

The 27-year-old midfielder took advantage of some shambolic defending from Achraf Hakimi and Nacho to open the scoring and level the tie.

Karim Benzema put Real back in the ascendancy with a neat chipped finish from a tight angle in the opening exchanges of the second half.

But seven minutes later, Leganes took the lead again, as Gabriel’s emphatic header from an out-swinging corner left Kiko Casilla with no chance.

Full credit to Leganes for reaching the semi-finalsEPA

The goal made the tie 2-2 with Leganes leading on away goals.

And that’s how it remained until the final whistle as Asier Garitano’s men survived a late onslaught from the hosts.

Questions will undoubtedly be asked of Zidane’s team selection.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale weren’t even named in the squad while first-team regulars Keylor Navas, Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane, Luka Modric and Casemiro all started on the bench.

Ronaldo’s cut was evident in trainingGetty - Contributor

The starting XI contained plenty of world-class talent of course — this is Real Madrid after all.

But Isco, Marco Asensio, Benzema and Sergio Ramos could not prevent a devastating upset.

Given that Real’s hopes of retaining the league title are all but over, you would have thought the Copa del Rey represented the club’s best chance of further silverware this season.

Real’s season is slipping away from themJUAN MEDINA

Ronaldo and Bale’s absences now seem extremely presumptuous on Zizou’s part.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner suffered a nasty cut to his face in Real’s 7-1 thrashing of Deportivo La Coruna at the weekend but it’s unlikely that would have ruled him out through injury.

Real are specialists in Europe but a round of 16 tie against free-scoring PSG represents a significant blockade to further Champions League success.

Given their relatively poor form, it’s now unlikely the club will add to their trophy cabinet until at least next season.

Leganes are 13th in La LigaEPA

Real Madrid don’t have much of a recent history when it comes to sticking by managers in tough times.

Surely even the great Zizou is under threat of the chop from executioner-in-chief Florentino Perez?

Cristiano Ronaldo used a phone during a game and there’s already hundreds of memes

Only Cristiano Ronaldo could produce such a reaction.

Real Madrid came from a goal down to beat Deportivo La Coruna 7-1 at the Bernabeu in La Liga this afternoon.

Ronaldo joined Gareth Bale and Nacho in scoring a brace with Luka Modric settling for just the one and Zinedine Zidane’s side swaggered to a convincing victory.

A mixed day for the five-time Ballon d’Or winnerREUTERS

However, because modern football is the way it is, one particular moment sparked more activity than any of the goals.

Ronaldo was left bloodied after stooping to head his second goal, catching a boot to the cranium for his troubles.

After receiving initial treatment from Real Madrid’s physio, the Portuguese superstar used a phone to check the damage.

Cue the memes…EPA

A lot of “game’s gone” type of fans seemed to be angered by Ronaldo’s use of technology to check his injury.

We don’t seem what’s so bad about it — most players would want to check the extent of the damage before deciding whether they were going to play on or not.

We’re almost hoping Ronaldo uploads a bloody selfie now, just to see how many people it TRIGGERS.

Liverpool fans go crazy for Andy Robertson after left-back’s performance against Man City

Liverpool fans go crazy for Andy Robertson after left-back’s performance against Man City

Forget Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson is the true hero at Liverpool this season.

The Scotland international – signed for a measly £8 million from Hull in the summer – has been blindingly good lately, well and truly nailing down the Reds troublesome left-back position.

CLAIM YOUR FREE £20 BET Sun Bets have this brilliant offer when you sign up and bet a fiver

And in Liverpool’s stunning 4-3 victory over Manchester City this evening, Robertson had the game of his life up against Anfield villain Raheem Sterling.

Sterling has been emphatic so far this seasonAFP or licensors

In the clash with the Premier League leaders, Jurgen Klopp’s side pulled off a relentless pressing display that clearly rattled City’s defence and nullified their attack.

At kick-off, all eyes were firmly on Sterling – a Liverpool favourite before his move to the Etihad in 2015 – who’s scored 14 times in the league so far this season.

PLAY DREAM TEAM WEEKENDER Pick seven players to win £10k!

But it all went a bit wrong for the winger, who was jeered throughout by the Anfield crowd, while Robertson marked him out of the game.

As you’d expect, a large portion of Twitter was very impressed.

Andrew Robertson just sprinted from left-back & pressed City’s goalkeeper & left-back.

— LFC Transfer Room (@LFCTransferRoom) January 14, 2018

Fantastic performance by Robertson. Kept his head throughout in a hugely pressurised game. He won more tackles (7) and made more interceptions (7) than any other player on the pitch today.

Andy Robertson is so good. Riise has finally been replaced.

— Matt (@FalseFirmino) January 14, 2018

The Kop are bellowing Andy Robertson's name and with good reason. His performance has been exceptional, caused Raheem Sterling to shortcircuit. He may have just made the left-back position his own.

— Dominic King (@DominicKing_DM) January 14, 2018

Robertson is an absolute steal at £8m. Up against Sterling and Walker today but didn’t flinch once. Brilliant in the tackle while getting forward on the overlap, too. Stunning performance.

— Leanne Prescott (@_lfcleanne) January 14, 2018

Robertson has been brilliant today!!! Energy!!! Love it!! @andrewrobertso5 what a performance

— John Arne Riise (@JARiiseOfficial) January 14, 2018

People laughed when I said Robertson's one of the best LBs in the division. Kept Sterling and Walker in his pocket. Maintain he can become one of the best in the world.

— RG (@registability) January 14, 2018

Robertson was phenomenal in the Derby. Even better here. Sterling in his back pocket since minute one. One of the best left back performances from any Liverpool player in years.

— Joel Rabinowitz (@joel_archie) January 14, 2018

One moment, late in the second-half when everyone was exhausted (including viewers in the stadium and at home), Robertson kept up his tremendous pressing play and absolutely terrified City’s back-line.

Starting off on the right flank with Bernardo Silva, Robertson chased down the Portuguese winger – who had no choice but to pass backwards to Kyle Walker.

Walker received the ball, but Robertson kept going.

And he only continues his pursuit when the right-back picks out John Stones in the middle.

Stones quickly swivels and picks out his goalkeeper, but the Liverpool defender doesn’t stop running.

This tiki-taka stuff is risky business; Robertson closes down Ederson who quickly passes to Nicolas Otamendi.

It gets tricky here for the big centre-back, who has no where else to play the ball as Roberto Firmino closes in.

Otamendi inevitably panics and loses the ball, much to the delight of the crowd.

Brilliant work all round.

More of the same, please?

Well, as we all know, Lukaku opted for the latter, making a whopping £75m move from Everton.

But that was apparently disobeying orders.

And not just any orders… the orders of a ‘voodoo’.

That’s according to Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri, who revealed an astonishing story at the club’s AGM sit down on Tuesday evening.

Moshiri believes Lukaku didn’t sign a new contract with the Toffees in the summer because a ‘voodoo’ had told him he had to move to Chelsea:
