Jose Mourinho secretly advising Gareth Southgate to play Marcus Rashford at right back

Jose Mourinho has been secretly advising England Manager Gareth Southgate to ensure Marcus Rashford plays at right-back.

The news comes after the Man United youngster was deployed in a right wing-back role for the Three Lions against Belgium.

Rashford has often suffered from Mourinho’s defensive tactics at Man United and hasn’t had the license to express himself.

England duty was meant to be the time when the youngster could flourish in an attacking role, however it has been more of the same for Rashford at the World Cup.

The 20-year-old started upfront against Belgium but missed a huge chance to put England 1-0 up.

Getty - Contributor This was the final nail in Rashford’s coffin[/caption]

It was that miss and conversations with Mourinho that made up Southgate’s mind about Rashford’s best position.

Lee Satchell, an unofficial England insider, told us: “Gareth spent his entire half-time team talk in discussion with Jose.

“The Man United boss agreed that Rashford was a good striker, but he is even better when used as a defender.

“Rashford will actually be starting in that position for United next season, after Jose said ‘we will be shipping out Mateo Darmian to make sure Rashford gets minutes at right-back.’

EPA The complete defender[/caption]

“Jose kept telling Gareth how good Jesse Lingard was at ‘fake right-back’ last year, but insisted he would use Rashford as an out-and-out right-back next season.’

Mourinho will continue to advise Southgate as the tournament develops.

England 6-1 Panama: Player Ratings as Awesome Three Lions Destroy Dismal Panama in World Cup Group G
England qualified for the last 16 of this year's FIFA World Cup on Sunday, after giving arguably their finest performance in a World Cup since their 3-0 demolition of Denmark in 2002. The Three Lions ran out 6-1 winners and Harry Kane scored a hat trick. Admittedly, their opponents - World Cup debutants Panama - were dire. Nevertheless, this was precisely the sort of game in which England have struggled in the past, where they had to break down stubbornly defensive opposition. Not this time -...

Time for a quick run through the many benefits of selecting Edinson Cavani.

Let’s start with the fact he’s coming off the back of a 40-goal season for PSG.

Take that, Guingamp!REUTERS

“Anyone can score in a farmers league,” we hear you mutter.

Okay, how about the fact he scored seven goals in eight games in the Champions League, a competition generally considered to be free of agricultural workers?

His international record is more relevant though right?

You’ll be pleased to hear he was the top scorer in South American qualifying.

Ten goals put him comfortably ahead of Lionel Messi, Alexis Sanchez, Gabriel Jesus and the rest.

Responsible for some of the best expressions in world footballAP:Associated Press

Forget the past, let’s look to the immediate future.

Uruguay have been gifted about as easy of a group as you could hope for at a World Cup.

They play Egypt first, who are likely to be without the recovering Mohamed Salah, before facing Saudi Arabia and a hopeless Russia side.

Cavani could plunder five goals in the group stages alone.

Some of you are probably hesitant to put him in your team because of doubts about how he can co-exist with Luis Suarez.

It’s a fair point.

In the past, Cavani has been made to play out left to accommodate the Barcelona goal machine.

These days however, the two form a lethal striker partnership.

If anything, Cavani is the man tasked with providing the finishing touch.

Double troubleEPA

And finally… at £5.0m he’s very affordable.

Robert Lewandowski, Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero are all priced higher than El Matador and face tougher opponents in the group stages.

To summarise, we’ve got an in-form forward, playing in his preferred position, for a team who are heavy favourites to top their group.

And at £1.0m cheaper than his equals to boot.

Got to be worth a punt, surely?
